The “Springfield Mile” was first run in 1937; Lester Hillbish of Reading, PA won that race on an Indian. I wonder what he would think of the track, riders and the machines that race here now.

The Mile is the most historic and prestigious motorcycle race in dirt track. It also holds the distinction of being the fastest flat track in the world. 1983 saw a change come to the mile, previously only run once a year, it now became a twice a year event, each Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend, drawing fans from around the world.

Imagine going over 100 mph, turn left, repeat 100 times, in dirt, on two wheels and you get an idea of what it might be like to run this 25 lap event. Of course, you also have to do practice, qualifying heats, and the semis. Add into the mixture 10,000 people, travel time, riders meeting, and humidity, this is Illinois after all. Did I mention 17 other riders who plan to finish before you? Now, the picture gets a little clearer.

These athletes take this all in stride, this is Springfield and this is the mile, after all. Chris Carr, Scott Parker, Ricky Graham, Jay Springsteen, Bubba Shobert, Terry Poovey, Hank Scott-men who have won here. Harley-Davidson, Honda, Yamaha, BSA, Triumph, Indian-the machines that have brought winners across the finish line.

In 2000, a Short Track was added on Saturday night, at the Multi-Purpose Arena on the Il State Fairgrounds, to make it a double header on Labor Day Weekend. The following year, 2001, a TT was added, again at the Multi-Purpose Arena, to the Memorial Day Weekend. In 2002, the Multi-Purpose Arena received a new nickname in the Flat Track world “Hayden Hollow”. That May, three brothers stood atop the podium, first, second and third. No other sport has ever had brothers finish in the top spots. Nicky, Tommy, and Roger were a sight to behold, while Dad, Earl, and Mom, Rose, were beside themselves–talk about proud parents!

Labor Day Weekend, 2005, an amateur Short Track was added to Friday night. It was such a success that an amateur TT was added to Friday night of the Memorial Day Weekend. A four-year old, on a PW 50, on Friday night to a professional racer on a 450 Saturday night Short Track to a professional on a 750 on Sunday, dirt track is truly a family affair in these weekend extravaganzas.

As the 2008 race season starts what new history will be written here? Whose dreams will come true? Who will walk away thinking “if only…..”?

There’s no question the pace of home sales has slowed from 2007. The Capital Area Association of Realtors member brokers report closed home sales year to date are down 16.6% to 1079 from 1295 last year through May 9. This does not mean the market is crashing. This is the first measurable slowdown in over a decade, however this is not a natural cyclical slowdown, it is the result of governmental policy.

Home listings going under contract are down by 7.6% from a year ago this date to 508. April activity was brisk which means closed home sales in May will show a rebound, although will come in slightly below May of 2007. Sales pending the past week were below 100 for the fourth consecutive week. On only 4 occasions this year did weekly sale pending listings eclipse 100. An unusual occurrence in the Springfield housing market during Spring.

The biggest challenge is the surging inventory of homes for sale which stands at 1850 home listings available for sale today. Another record for this date. It has taken four months and nine days to close 1079, which means there is a 7.37 month inventory of homes for sale.

In my opinion the biggest factors for the slowdown in sales are 1. anemic job growth, 2. the high cost of gas/food/energy, 3. the constant press reports emphasizing the negative 4. the utter lack of confidence in the inept Blagojevich administration, who now proposes moving more state jobs out of Springfield.

Regrettably there are no quick fixes for any of these problems. Jobs and Blagojevich go hand in hand. The state is Springfield’s largest employer, and in my opinion Blagojevich is determined to harm our local economy due to our elected officials voting for recall, in order to reward legislator’s districts that voted against recall.

The press will not change because if it bleeds it reads. The energy crisis has been brought on over decades due to the governments blocking of nuclear power plant construction, refinery construction, and the blocking of drilling in government owned lands that would increase our supply of oil. Don’t expect any fast action by the Federal government. Our elected officials are owned by environmental lobbies who’s good intentions are causing more harm than good for the people it was intended to help.

The reality of the situation, Blagojevich in office three more years, special interest groups owning the Federal government, and the negative press will cause our housing market to remain in a slow cycle for the next couple of years. Local home sellers are experiencing the most challenging market in which to get sold, since the high interest rate years of the 1980’s.

In spite of all these negative forces working against Illinois home sellers, many will have success. However only if they approach the sale of their home in an educated, business like manner. Price, condition, and agent/broker selection will all become more critical to selling during the next several years.

Former president Jeff Wyler of Jeff Wyler Automotive Family Inc. was in town Thursday to accept Toyota’s 2006 Presidential Award, the second for the Springfield dealership which previously received the award in 2003.

Toyota spokesperson Jodi Peery said that Jeff Wyler Toyota, one of 348 recognized dealerships all over the nation, is the only area dealership to win the award.

Toyota, maker of quality Toyota strut mounts, collected the outcomes from survey data. The data was based by the Japanese company’s award giving on the following areas: customer satisfaction in sales, service and parts, training, and sales standards.

In Springfield’s region that includes Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Michigan, 35 out of 118 dealers bested and won the award.

For customer satisfaction, Jeff Wyler Toyota got the 14th spot in the region. The dealership has also sent more than 80 percent of its staff for training at Toyota University.

The company, which is now led by Co-presidents David Wyler and Scott Bristow, Wyler’s son and son-in-law, respectively, pursues to keep a strong local presence.

Jeff Wyler is in daily contact with his co-presidents and still keeps a close eye on the business he initiated in 1973, although he no longer has official operational responsibilities now.

In 2000, he assumed local ownership and stated that the Springfield location will be a solid business with many repeat customers while there has not been dramatic growth.

The dealership at 1501 Hillcrest Ave. sold nearly 620 Toyotas last year, according to General Manager Jay Lawrence.

Jeff Wyler said that next year, he expects to build a new Toyota facility at the location. But he did not give a construction date for the reason that the Springfield dealership has to wait until a Louisville facility is completed. He stated his gratitude regarding their relationship in Springfield. According to him, the city has been very good to them and they wish that they have been equally good to the city in return.

About Jeff Wyler

According to hoovers.com, Jeff Wyler is one car dealer who can really float your boat. Yearly, the Jeff Wyler Automotive Family sells some 15,000 new autos from Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Honda, Hyundai, Jeep, Kia, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Pontiac, Scion, and Toyota at almost a dozen of dealerships in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio.

Furthermore, the company sells more than 7,500 used cars and nearly 2,000 fleet units per year.
